TOOTH WHITENING BLEACHING
There are a variety of different techniques, such as BRITESMILE Both will make your teeth WHITER, but everyone has limits as to HOW WHITE their teeth will get. DOES BLEACHING HARM THE TEETH? BLEACHING teeth does not harm the teeth, but it can make them more SENSITIVE to hot and or cold substances. This SENSITIVITY is usually temporary, but it may be uncomfortable nonetheless. BLEACHING also is NOT PERMANENT. Over time, the WHITENESS will fade, and will either need to be RE-WHITENED, or will return to whatever shade it was originally.
IN OFFICE, the dentist will put the bleach on your teeth, then shine a light on the teeth for about an hour, while you watch television or whatever. If you want it done NOW, do it in the office. The actual process takes about 2 hours because there is some prep time involved. A common one for this process is, ZOOM tooth whitening. FOR BLEACHING AT HOME, the dentist will take impressions of your teeth, make BLEACHING TRAYS for you, and give you the bleach to fill the trays with. You put the bleach into the trays, place the trays in your mouth, go to sleep (or some people may not want to leave them in that long) or leave them in for an hour or however long, and you are done. You will likely need to repeat this process over multiple days/nights, depending on what type of results you get. Rest assured though, the trays are very comfortable, and are easily tolerated by most individuals. INTRINSIC stains are INCORPORATED into the tooth, and it may or may not be able to bleach these stains out. If they do come out, it definitely will take much longer and much more bleaching (months vs weeks). These stains were incorporated into the tooth structure during tooth development, so they are not mere surface stains. WHAT CAUSES INTRINSIC STAINS? FLUOROSIS: While some fluoride is excellent, too much can cause STAINING of the teeth. TETRACYCLINE: An antibiotic often taken for such common maladies as ACNE, can cause staining of the teeth if taken by the patient or parent during tooth development. These stains can be reduced by bleaching, but it may take several months of home bleaching. DECALCIFICATION: This has a chalky white appearance, and is actually the beginning stages of tooth decay . Whitening your teeth may make these stains a little less noticible, but will probably not remove them completely. They most likely will need to be filled as cavities if you want them removed. TRAUMA: Teeth that have sustained trauma, often will die. In these cases, the teeth become darker and need to have ROOT CANAL THERAPY done. Fortunately, these teeth often can be bleached to become lighter, but they must be done INTERNALLY, by the dentist, and after the ROOT CANAL has been completed.
DENTIST OFFICE WHITESTRIPS: There is a whitestrip formula NOT sold over the counter, which is about THREE TIMES as strong as the OTC formula. Not surprisingly, it is quite a bit more expensive.
WHITENING BLEACHING TOOTHPASTES: In general, these are not very effective in the short term, but may have a CUMULATIVE effect, and may be used as an adjunct. Again, used alone, it would be unrealistic to expect DRASTIC results.
WHITENING FLOSS, GUM, and OTHER PRODUCTS:, Again, these may have a slight effect, but if you REALLY want those PEARLY WHITES, your best bet is to have them PROFESSIONALLLY WHITENED.
